Columba-Altar: Anbetung der Könige

Columba-Altar: Anbetung der Könige

More about this artwork
The winged retable takes its name from its place of origin, the Cologne church St. Columba. The here depicted middle panel shows the Adoration of the Magi and on the side panels Mary's Annunciation and the Presentation of Jesus in the temple. The brilliant coloration, the almost microscopically rendered details and the strong solemnity that the figures seem to radiate even impressed Goethe when he saw the work in Heidelberg in 1814/15. Through the almost hidden details - the crucified figure above the newborn, the fall of man relief on the prie-dieu of the Annunciation and the "New Eve" - a surprising depth of thought is expressed.
