This painting, stylistically related to the work of the pre-Rembrandtists around Pieter Lastman (inv. no. 4947), depicts an episode in Ovid’s Metamorphoses. At Juno’s command, Argus watches over Io, object of Jupiter’s lust, whom the latter has turned into a cow in order to protect her from his jealous wife.
