For his video piece RE-ENACTMENTS, Belgian artist Francis Alÿs (b. 1959) filmed himself buying a gun and walking through the streets of Mexico City with it at his side. We see him being overpowered by the police after eleven minutes. Shortly after, he repeats the action, but now with a non-firing replica instead. This time, the police are in on the act and join the artist in re-staging the events of the first arrest.
In the interweaving of performance and video art, Alÿs explores the boundaries between documentation and fiction by directly juxtaposing the original and its re-enactment. In doing so, he questions the truth and pliability of media images.
