Son of the powerful merchant Raymond Fugger from Augsburg, Christoph Fugger (1520–1579) followed the family tradition and became a merchant. After spending time in Schwaz (Tyrol), Antwerp, and France, he was active in Spain and Naples, and, moreover, was so to great effect, accumulating a fortune of 1.6 million gulden upon his death. His elegant pose, hand on hip, is matched by his clothing. His fur-lined doublet is made of black Atlas silk, his cloak is draped over his shoulders and around his body in the manner of ancient togati (“toga-wearers”). Both this sartorial reference and the architectural backdrop refer to Italian models.
