Constable's landscapes revealed an unparalleled precision in the observation of nature, a feature that impressed both British and Continental artists and critics. He favoured subjects taken from the English countryside with which he was intimately familiar, as in this example, and showed a penchant for cloudy skies and striking effects of light.
