Rubens illustrates the climax of the hunt with just a few confident brushstrokes and coloured areas. Attack, defense, and acute danger are depicted in a compact form. The streaked translucent imprimatura forms a lively ground.

That this marriage is based on love is underlined by the sculpture in the background. It shows God the Father with his Son whom he has sacrificed to save mankind. Compared to the other sketch on this subject (inv. no. 94), God’s indicative gesture here is still relatively vague.
