More about this artwork
This painting has an animated history. After having been in the collection of a French nobleman it ended up in the possession of Kaiser Rudolph II in 1602 and a few years subsequent to that in the chamber gallery of Elector Maximilian I in Munich. Already then the two originally half-round closed panels were converted into a single, high rectangular panel; the kneeling donor has been transformed into St. Joseph through the use of several attributes, such as lilies and carpentry tools. This alterations were dismantled for the most part in 1911.
