Van Goyen is considered the principal representative of tonal painting, which was established in Dutch landscape painting from the mid 1620s onwards. The shades of grey, ochre, and brown, which form an almost monochrome spectrum of colours, were generally applied thinly and quickly using the wet-on-wet technique.
