This wooded landscape is one of the earliest works by Hobbema, a renowned landscape painter at the end of the 17th century. The towering oak trees set against a cloudy sky are reminiscent of the work of his teacher, Jacob van Ruisdael, with whom Hobbema travelled to Germany in 1661.
