Wilson is considered by many to be the father of British landscape painting. Influenced principally by the light-flooded, idealised classical landscapes of Claude Lorraine, he surprised the artistic establishment by taking some of his motifs from the countryside in Britain. In these images he paved the way for the almost documentary approach to indigenous natural surroundings explored by John Constable and J. M. W. Turner.
