The Villa Mills stood in the grounds of the Domus Augustana on the Palatine hill and was famous for its views. Neureuther¿s picture features two of these painted on a pair of wall-hangings. The view on the left shows the ruins of the baths of Caracalla and the Aventine hill, that on the right the Gianicolo and the dome of St Peter¿s. The artist thus juxtaposes ancient Rome with the Christian city.
