The format of this half-length portrait is derived from 16th century models. The focus of attention is entirely on the lively facial features, which suggest a certain creative fervour. Van Dyck maintained a friendship with Snayers, who was active in Brussels and attended to business matters there on Van Dyck’s behalf.
