Inspired by full-length pictures of the aristocracy, Ter Borch, who was active in Deventer, introduced a new genre of painting with these small-format portraits of patricians (see inv. no. 8128), dressed as befitted their rank and set against a neutral background, which reflect the self-assurance of the elite in the Netherlands.
