St. Luke’s Gospel tells of how Mary and Joseph celebrated the Feast of the Passover and set off on their journey back home without noticing that their son had stayed behind in Jerusalem. After searching for him for three days they found Jesus in the temple debating with the doctors. Stom depicts this scene as a discussion and confrontation between the teaching boy and the tight throng of scholars who react excitedly, contradict him, and reflect upon what they hear.
