A carefully composed, fluidly painted landscape is shown here. A shepherdess is sitting near her sheep in the shade of the trees. Peasants are crossing a viaduct. A circular temple lies on higher ground in the distance. The vegetation is native French. It is presumed that the painting was created as a design for a stage set of ‘Issé’, an opera about Apollo’s love for a shepherdess, which was premiered in 1697.
