A painting by Parmigianino served Rubens as a model for this copy, which however departs noticeably from the original. Aside from the desire to have celebrated works by other masters represented in his collection, Rubens was clearly drawn to the challenge of outdoing a well-known work. He deliberately chose an image that had enjoyed enormous fame during the 16th century.
