The book and the crossed hands denote Mary in contemplation after receiving the message from the angel. Removed from any contextual setting, this form of depiction became a pictorial subject in its own right in Florence, where paintings of the Annunciaton were especially popular. This panel in its original frame was probably used for devotional prayer in a private house.
