Van Honthorst is one of the many early seventeenth-century painters who were influenced by Caravaggio. His night scenes are known for their skillful depiction of the effects of warm candlelight. Here, three cavaliers in a brothel have abandoned themselves to food, wine, and the pretty courtesans. An old procuress has joined the group around the table and shows her approval. The moralising message takes second place to the lively goings-on.
