This cabinet painting has been attributed to a variety of different well-known painters in Northern Italy from the early sixteenth-century—including Palma, Giorgione, Sebastiano del Piombo and Giulio Campagnola. The significance of the youth is equally contentious. It is possibly Faunus (Pan), the Greek god of nature and guardian of shepherds.
