In its compositional form, this work is the earliest example of an image type that was to remain normative for Tuscan painting up into the sixteenth century. Set against gold and thus suffused with divine light, Mary ascends towards heaven. The spatial composition of the roundelay of angels as well as naturalistically rendered details testify to the high artistic standards of the master, who was active in Siena.
