Dressed identically in red nursery gowns with a yellow underskirt, white apron, fashionable collar, cuffs, and lace bonnet, the two 33-week-old twins pose on two children’s chairs upholstered in green leather. In their right hand they hold a silver rattle and sport bracelets of red-coral beads, which in the 17th century were customarily worn by children. Originally a Marian symbol of a red rosary, such bracelets were considered lucky charms with the power to ward off illness and ill fate.
