A young girl is lying stark naked on a chaise longue; a small brazier on the floor provides warmth. Are we looking at a model of Boucher’s who was taken by King Louis XV to be his mistress in 1753? This has long been supposed—but cannot be proven. Scenes like this were popular among collectors and were to be found in small private picture galleries. Another version, dated 1751, is now in the Wallraf Richartz Museum & Fondation Corboud in Cologne.
