The meeting with Paul of Thebes forms the centre of this painting: the hermits, sitting outside Paul’s cell next to the water fount, are brought bread by a raven. To the left and right in the background are seldom-depicted scenes from the legends of the two saints, including various ‘Temptations of St Anthony’. The Antonines of Cologne, for whom this panel was created, will have instructed the artist. The preceptor, Wenceslaus Ulner, in office between 1493 and 1518, is probably the donor kneeling on the right.
