This view is of the Ij—the inlet of the Zuiderzee in northern Holland—with busy shipping traffic and, far in the distance, beyond a forest of ships’ masts, glimpses of the skyline of Amsterdam, home to global trading companies. The central object is a large sailing vessel. Judging from its three masts and bulbous shape, it is a “fleute”, the most common type of Dutch merchant ship at the time. The painting is signed “L Bakhuizen” on the starboard of the small barque in the foreground and dated “1697” on the lid of a barrel.
