Sumptuous vessels, silver platters, a cooked lobster, and numerous fruits on a heavy velvet cloth have been assembled to form a decorative and ornate still life—an expression of a luxurious lifestyle. The fleeting fortune of earthly exuberance is suggested by the pocket watch at the edge of the table. Ranging from the velvety skin of the peach to polished precious metal and its multiple reflections, Van Beyeren captures the various surfaces with great accuracy in broad brushstrokes.
