Millet painted heroic landscapes in the tradition of Nicolas Poussin and Gaspard Dughet. In keeping with the convention of classical landscape painting the eye is carefully drawn into the distance through the balanced composition. In the foreground two women walk past a seated, semi-naked man. Whether this is really Diogenes, as has been presumed, remains uncertain.
