Neo Rauch is one of the most important artists of his generation internationally. In his work, the present is mirrored as a period of enlightenment and disenlightenment in equal measure. Old and new pictorial motifs become intermingled; myths unravelled and rewritten. His unmistakable painterly style picks up on art-historical traditions. The painting Wahl (Choice) depicts a scene in the studio, showing tools used by the artist, works in-the-making and completed pictures. A lot of the details draw attention to the painterly process itself. The painter is shown in double, standing uneasily on a ladder. The `choice¿ could be to do with clichés and façades, with different points of view regarding reality. The painting is a reflection of the human conflict that arises out of personal notions and social expectations.
