The distanced and melancholic habitus of this bearded man draws on portraits by Giorgione and Titian. He is probably to be identified as the Venetian condottiere (mercenary leader) Giulio Manfron (1490/92–1526). This is suggested by his close resemblance to a well-documented likeness of Manfron which Paris Bordone included in an altarpiece originally from the church of San Agostino in Crema (now on display in the Galleria Tadini in Lovere).
