The setting sun bathes the Rock of Gibraltar in warm light and illuminates the town of Algeciras, while the dried-up riverbed in the foreground is immersed in the evening shade. Schack felt that the scene was presented to the viewer ‘in a purified, transfigured form, as reflected in the artist’s innermost being: it is not one evening in Gibraltar that we experience here, but the sum and flower of many sunsets, the most beautiful features of which have been selected for the painting’.
