For three days in August 1992, local youths and residents from Rostock-Lichtenhagen, and neo-Nazis from former West Germany who had travelled there especially, repeatedly threatened an asylum-seeker centre and adjoining dormitory building for former Vietnamese “contract workers”. At one point, they even set it on fire. The residents only survived because they were able to break open a roof hatch at the last minute. For several hours of escalation, the police did nothing to intervene, in fact they visibly withdrew. On 17 October 1992 in Thale, a small town in the Harz Mountains, 13, 14, and 16-year-old youths attacked, looted, and destroyed a Vietnamese dormitory, beating and coercing the residents. They entered the site after some had been invited to join residents for a meal. On 29 May 1993 in Solingen, five Turkish women and girls died in an arson attack on a house occupied by a Turkish family, the Gençs. Three other children suffered life-threatening injuries. On 20 May 1994, youths in Bielefeld-Senne threw a Molotov cocktail into a house of Turkish workers, destroying an entire floor. The residents were able to escape unharmed.
