The painting "Holy Family beneath the Portico" is a major work of the young artist which already shows his fully developed competence as a colorist. The depiction of the Holy Family is done in the style of panel paintings of the late Middle Ages. Maria is seated in a loggia and holds the Christ child in her lap. There are a few steps that lead out into the open from the back of the loggia where Joseph with an axe is at work with his carpentry.
The depiction of every-day tasks, as well as of material attributes, such as the flowers on the windowsill, the open book, the pomegranate being held by the Christ child and the foot of the Virgin peeking out from her garment, is taken from late Medieval art, which the Nazarenes wanted to revive. In contrast, the far-off landscape and the rows of houses to the right invest the painting with a more classical-southern Italian feel.
