This painting—the companion piece to ‘Landscape with Ruins of a Roman Temple’ (inv.nr. 14717)—depicts a water basin with fountains and antique troughs into which water flows. Pots of flowering plants signalise that this is in a park; rustic figures and elegant people pass by, stop for a rest or are out for a stroll. The sculpture on the right in the foreground is a Vestal, regarded as the embodiment of virtue.
