The figure of the early Christian martyr Sebastian offered a rare opportunity to depict a nude. Due to the perpetual fear of the plague, Sebastian—as the patron saint of plague victims—became one of the most popular saints in Italy. Sellaio’s pronouncedly fragmented panel shows the martyr being attacked by two rough henchmen, whose arrows fail to kill him.
