Documenting the plant and animal kingdom in the Dutch colony in northeast Brazil, these panoramic views (see inv. no. 1561) of alluvial plains, gently rolling hills, and plantations, peopled with local inhabitants, were only created five years after the painter’s return to his native Haarlem.
