Hl. Veronika mit dem Schweißtuch Christi

Hl. Veronika mit dem Schweißtuch Christi

More about this artwork
According to legend, St. Veronica (vera icon = true image) handed Christ a cloth on his way to Calvary in order to dry his sweat, upon which his blooded-stained face remained imprinted. This "true image" brought hundreds of thousands of pilgrims to St. Peters in Rome, as its adoration was awarded with indulgence. Among the large range of replications of this popular motif, this painting by a Cologne painter ranks as a fine work of art. Goethe, who saw the painting in Heidelberg, penned a vivid description of it.
