The theologian Hendrik van Thulden of Antwerp, who died shortly after the portrait was completed, was admitted to the Chapter of Antwerp Cathedral in 1610. Soon afterwards, he presided over St. George’s Church where he was to find his final resting place. Rubens used the black of the garments and a background in shades of brown to emphasise the facial features which suggest intelligence and a lively mind. His fingers, still between the pages of the book, give the portrait a spontaneous note.
