More about this artwork
Willem van Heythuysen amassed his wealth as a yarn trader in Haarlem. Being a strict Calvinist, he used his fortune judiciously, establishing two almshouses, one of which still exists today. Hals has posed him in a self confident, slightly haughty stance. However the wilting roses on the floor signify the limits of earthly possessions.
